Terms and Definitions

CTE: Career and Technical Education. These courses are usually at least a 3-year sequence. At the end of any CTE course, students will take a work readiness and a content test. If they pass both tests and maintain a 3.0 GPA in the sequence, they will receive a certificate and be certified in that career path.

Core GPA: Also known as the academic GPA or the NSHE GPA. This is calculated by assigning all letter grades to a number (A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, and F=0) for the core classes only (English, math, science, and history) and dividing that by the number of semester grades on the transcript.

Credit:  The value given to a course. AVHS Classes are worth 0.5 credits every semester.

Elective: A course you select the interests you or prepares you for future learning and career aspirations

EOC: End of Course exams. All students must pass these exams before they can graduate from high school. Currently there are 4; 2 math and 2 English exams. There are plans to add more exams later.

GPA: Grade Point Average. This is calculated by assigning a point value to all grades (A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, and F=0), adding those values together, and then dividing by the number of grades on the transcript.

Prerequisite: A course you must take before taking a course. For example, Art I is a prerequisite for the Drawing or Painting class.

Required Course: A course you MUST take and complete to graduate from high school.

Weighted GPA: Each honors and AP class is given an extra weight to add to the GPA. 0.50 is added to the first 4 semesters of AP; 0.025 is added to honors classes. These classes cannot exceed 28 semester classes. The calculated GPA cap is 4.8, the highest GPA a student can earn in Clark County School District.
