When requesting a letter of recommendation, be sure to give your Counselor at least 2 weeks notice. You want them to write a powerful letter for you. This is difficult if you do not give them the time to think about it.

Give the counselor a brief summary of what you want them to discuss in the letter. Colleges and scholarships sometimes are looking for different things. Counselors write many letters of recommendation; give them reason to write a personal letter and not copy from a template. Remember, the letter should not just restate what is on your transcript; it should highlight why you are different and stand out. Generic letters fulfill requirements for letters, but they do not add to your application. Choose teachers who know you and will write a positive recommendation.
